The rise of Christianity did very little to curb slavery. Even St. Augustine, in the 5th century, thought it acceptable for slaves to be obtained by kidnapping, provided the kidnapping took place outside the boundaries of the empire (Letters CSEL 88.8, 10).

minus est quam servus dominus qui servos timet

An owner who fears his slaves is less than a slave.

Publilius Syrus Sententiae M 14

XIV

ANIMALS

mus syllaba est; mus caseum rodit; syllaba ergo caseum rodit

“Mouse” is a syllable; a mouse nibbles cheese; therefore a syllable nibbles cheese.

Seneca Letters 48.6
